Eagles dominate on both sides in beating Lions

By BRANDON COSTA • STAFF WRITER • September 25, 2009

The Flexbone offense ran to perfection as a steady diet of sophomore Tim McArdie and junior Kyle Bunge controlled the ground and the clock as the Eagles ran 44 plays to the Lions' 17 in the first half.

South controlled the game from the outset as a six-play, 41-yard run-heavy drive was punctuated by senior Sean Campbell's 2-yard plunge that gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead with 4:33 remaining in the first quarter.

On their next possession, South embarked on a 14-play, 90-yard drive in which McArdie carried the ball six times for 32 yards. That included a 13-yard scamper on an option pitch from junior quarterback Scott Meeker in which McArdie sliced through the left side of the Jackson Liberty (1-1, 0-1) defense into the end zone.

The Eagles defense was equally up to the task, holding the Lions to just 17 yards of total offense in the first half as South enjoyed a 17-0 halftime lead. The D didn't let up in the second half either as both senior defensive back Brian Benedetto and senior linebacker Connor Gilbert intercepted Jackson Liberty quarterbacks.

Benedetto's interception set up a drive that was capped by his 36-yard touchdown catch to give the Eagles a 31-0 lead with 3:26 left in the third quarter. Gilbert, meanwhile, returned his pick to the house with 6:21 left in the fourth to cap the scoring.

On the ground, McArdie finished with 59 yards on 13 carries while Bunge barreled through the line for 54 yards on 13 carries. Meeker had a good night through the air, completing 6 of his 13 passes for 76 yards.

The Eagles (3-0, 1-0) now carry a ton of momentum into their Oct. 2 matchup with Freehold; a battle of the two teams to have held the No. 1 spot in the APP poll this season.
