NEW BRUNSWICK — The Middletown South Eagles landed in New Brunswick and they went home with a 27-6 nonconference win. Quarterback Scott Meeker found tight end Sean Campbell for a score and running back Kyle Bunge drove 25 yards to set up a Nick Bricker scoring dash as Middletown South pulled away in the third quarter, turning a 14-0 lead into a 27-0 advantage.
The Eagles (2-0) utilized plenty of Meeker power runs along with timely passing for the win.
The Zebras' lone score came after a Simuel Williams 40-yard kick return gave them the ball on Middletown South's 33. Brunswick QB Jalen Long scrambled 10 yards for the late fourth-quarter score.
The game started a bit tentatively for both sides and featured a series of turnovers. However the Eagles found their footing, thanks largely to a Meeker option strike to Taylor Rogers for 20 yards. That put the Eagles on the Zebras' 36-yard line during their second series of the game. The 5-foot-7 Bunge then powered out a 10-yard run and broke through the middle for a 25-yard touchdown dash for the Eagles' first score. Meeker then targeted Colton Rochelle on a 61-yard screen pass to make it 14-0 Eagles going into the half.
The Zebras sustained a drive late in the first half from their 26. Quarterback Jalen Long connected with Sydney Williams for a 39-yard gain and Williams broke several tackles during an 8-yard run for a first down. New Brunswick eventually turned the ball over on downs as the clock wound down.
